For years the elderly might have been viewed as INSANE especially when they say that they are seeing “things” which YOU do not see. Our first thought might have been that their behavior was related to old age.
Let’s think for a second…………could they really be seeing things? The answer to this is YES!!!
There is a great possibility that they might be victims of Charles Bonnet Syndrome and this is what this page is about.
What really is Charles Bonnet Syndrome?
Charles Bonnet Syndrome is a condition that affects ONLY the visually impaired whereby they see things that are not there known as Visual Hallucination. Although I started off by speaking about the elderly people, it should be noted that ANYONE (including the young) could be a victim of Charles Bonnet Syndrome. Charles Bonnet Syndrome could affect anyone with a visual impairment. Please note though that NOT EVERYONE with a visual impairment may get Charles Bonnet Syndrome.
The Trinidad and Tobago Society for Charles Bonnet Syndrome was registered in February 2014 and incorporated under The Companies Act, 1995 of Trinidad and Tobago as an NGO.
The aim of this Society is to bring on an awareness of Charles Bonnet Syndrome so that victims, their caregivers and the wider society could learn about this condition.
Being a caregiver of a victim with CBS I would like to share my experiences, hear your experiences and together we could make a difference in the lives of others.
One might ask what are my credentials in this area of study. The answer to this is NONE. I am just a wife, mother of two children , grandmother of one, a Degree in Business Administration and a passion to help others who are less fortunate. My knowledge about Charles Bonnet Syndrome was gained from reading and listening to the amazing Oliver Sacks, M.D., Physician, Author, Neurologist; Royal National Institute for the Blind; The Macular Society’s website and encouragement
from family friends and Actress Judith Potts from the Telegraph who willingly pledged her support to me. I must say thanks again.
For further information on the Charles Bonnet Syndrome one can view Dr.Oliver Sacks youtube on TED as well as his recent book on Hallucinations as well as information from The Macular Society’s website.
